Eleni Arapoglou is a singer from Athens, Greece, currently based in New York City. From a young age she had developed an interest in theatre, music and dance, and was involved in several productions during her school years. In 2007 she went to London where she studied archaeology and art history of Asia, Africa & the Middle East. A year later she transferred to Tufts University from where she graduated with a Bachelors degree in drama and dance. While focusing on directing, set design and modern dance, Eleni also joined the Tufts Jazz Orchestra as a lead singer with which she toured in Costa Rica and Bulgaria. She had participated in several jazz ensembles and opened with her band for The Roots in May '11. In September '11 she started her musical studies at Berklee College of Music and three years later obtained her Professional Diploma in vocal performance. Fascinated by the variety of musical traditions, she has studied music from India, the Middle East, the Balkans, Latin American, flamenco, Greek music as well as songs from the world of jazz & soul. Singing such different music lead her to develop a quite versatile voice and curious ear with which she constantly explores the beauty of improvisation, both in jazz and in a freer musical landscape. Some teachers she is fortunate to have studied with are Simon Shaheen, Rhiannon, Diane Richardson, Donna McElroy, Deborah Brown, Lenny Stallworth, Fernando Michelin, Lisa Thorson. During her years at Berklee she performed at the Latin Grammy Ceremony with Alejandro Sanz in November '13, at the Berklee Commencement Concert in May '13 in Madrid with her trio at the MMI Master of Mediterranean Music Award Ceremony honoring flamenco masters Jose Merce and Pepe Habichuela, as well as in many other notable performances across the United Stated and Europe. Eleni is now performing in New York with her own group while collaborating in various projects, always eager to explore her voice and performance in different settings that challenge her as an artist.
